NotebookLM is an impressive AI research assistant from Google. One of its most useful features is the ability to automatically generate slide decks from documents, notes, and research material. With a single click, NotebookLM can summarize content and turn it into a structured presentation.

However, there is a major limitation.

👉 NotebookLM only allows you to download slide decks as a PDF. There is no direct option to export slides as PowerPoint or Google Slides.

This becomes a problem when you want to:

  • Edit the text
  • Change slide layouts
  • Add branding or animations
  • Reuse slides for courses, YouTube videos, or client presentations

In this article, you’ll learn the correct and reliable way to convert NotebookLM PDF slides into an editable PowerPoint, using Canva Pro’s Grab Text feature.

No shortcuts. No wrong assumptions. Just the workflow that actually works.

Step 1: Create a Slide Deck Using NotebookLM

Start by generating your slides inside NotebookLM.
  1. Open NotebookLM
  2. Create a new notebook
  3. Upload your source content (PDF, article, notes, or pasted text)
  4. In the prompt area, type something like: “Create a slide deck summarizing this content in 8–10 slides.”
  5. Click Slide Deck
  6. Review the generated slides
  7. Click Download → PDF

At this stage, NotebookLM gives you a polished slide deck, but the PDF contains image-based slides, not editable text.

This is important to understand.

Why NotebookLM Slides Are Not Editable

Even though the slides look like text, titles, and bullet points, everything inside the PDF is flattened into images.

If you:

  • Open the PDF in PowerPoint
  • Upload it to Google Slides
  • Use free PDF-to-PPT converters

You’ll notice:

  • You can’t click or select text
  • Fonts cannot be edited
  • Layouts cannot be changed
  • Everything behaves like a screenshot

This is not a bug. It’s how NotebookLM exports slides.

So we need a tool that can:

  • Read text from images
  • Convert that text into editable layers
  • Preserve accuracy

That’s where Canva Pro comes in.

Step 2: Import the NotebookLM PDF into Canva Pro

Log in to your Canva Pro account (Grab Text is a Pro-only feature).

  1. Go to canva.com
  2. Click Create a Design
  3. Choose Import File
  4. Upload your NotebookLM PDF

Canva will open the PDF as a presentation, but each slide is still a single image.

At this point:

  • Text is NOT editable
  • You cannot modify titles or paragraphs

This is expected. Do not stop here.

Step 3: Use Canva Pro’s Grab Text Feature (This Is the Critical Step)

This is the step most tutorials get wrong — so let’s explain it clearly and correctly.

What Grab Text Actually Does

Grab Text is Canva Pro’s OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature. It scans image-based content and extracts real, editable text from it.

NotebookLM PDFs work perfectly with this feature.

Step-by-Step: Extract Text from NotebookLM Slides Using Grab Text

  1. Click on the slide image (the full background image of the slide)
  2. Click Edit Image at the top
  3. In the left panel, scroll to Magic Studio
  4. Click Grab Text (Pro feature)

Canva now analyzes the slide image.

After a few seconds:

  • Canva extracts all visible text
  • Titles, paragraphs, and descriptions are detected
  • The extracted text appears in a side panel

Now you can:

  • Copy the extracted text
  • Paste it onto the slide as real text boxes
  • Edit font, size, color, alignment, spacing

🎯 Important: The original slide image is still just a reference. Once you paste editable text, you can delete or hide the image.

Rebuild the Slide Properly

After pasting the text:

  • Add a heading text box for the title
  • Use bullet points instead of paragraphs
  • Apply a Canva presentation layout
  • Align content cleanly

You are now rebuilding the slide — not converting it automatically, but converting it correctly.

Repeat this process for each slide:

  • Select image
  • Grab Text
  • Paste editable text
  • Redesign slide

Yes, it takes a few minutes — but the result is fully editable and professional.

Step 4: Enhance the Slides with Canva Pro

Now that your content is editable, Canva becomes very powerful.

You can:

  • Apply professional presentation templates
  • Use Brand Kit (logo, fonts, colors)
  • Add icons, charts, illustrations
  • Insert animations and transitions
  • Resize slides for YouTube, courses, or LinkedIn

This is where NotebookLM + Canva becomes a serious content workflow.

Step 5: Export as Editable PowerPoint (.PPTX)

Once your slides are finalized:

  1. Click Share
  2. Click Download
  3. Select Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx)
  4. Download the file

The exported PowerPoint:

  • Has editable text
  • Preserves slide structure
  • Opens perfectly in PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Keynote

You now have a true editable PPT, not image-based slides.

Why Canva Grab Text Is Better Than PDF Converters

Most PDF-to-PPT tools fail with NotebookLM slides because:

  • They convert images into images
  • OCR accuracy is poor
  • Formatting breaks
  • Text becomes uneditable again

Canva Pro’s Grab Text works better because:

  • It is designed for image-based content
  • OCR is accurate
  • You control layout reconstruction
  • Final export is clean PPTX

This is the only reliable method right now.

Who This Workflow Is Perfect For

This method is ideal for:

  • Udemy instructors creating course slides
  • YouTubers turning scripts into presentations
  • Developers documenting AI research
  • Students converting notes into editable decks
  • Consultants preparing client presentations

If you use NotebookLM seriously, this workflow is essential.

Final Thoughts

NotebookLM is excellent at content generation, but limited in content control.

Canva Pro’s Grab Text feature bridges that gap.

You are not “auto-converting” slides. You are extracting, rebuilding, and owning the content.

That’s the difference between a hack and a professional workflow.

If you want editable, reusable, branded presentations from NotebookLM — this is the correct way to do it.
